SUMMARY:Carrousel Chess Classic
DESCRIPTION:Open to students in grades K–12    As part of National Chess Month the Carrousel Museum is proud to host the 2nd Annual Carrousel Chess Classic. The tournament will feature three rounds of no-elimination chess at 12:00pm\, 1:00pm\, and 2:00pm; a unique all-girls competition; and an awards ceremony with trophies to recognize top competitors in the various categories. The tournament will follow United States Chess Federation rules and is open to any chess player in grades K–12\, as long as they have sufficient playing ability to recognize check and checkmate. Spectators accompanying a tournament participant receive reduced admission to the event and the museum for only $3. Players must bring chess set\, board\, and digital chess clock and report by 11:30am the day of the tournament. (A limited number of chess sets are available for use with advance notice). Classes are taught by Doug Bathke\, who has been carving for 48 years and teaching for 37 years. Fee includes instruction and pattern; participants must bring a piece of basswood 2” thick X 18” long X 6”–8” wide. Students must have their own tools\, including gouges for relief carving\, two 6-inch (or larger) C-clamps\, and a pencil. Tour the museum's exhibits of antique carrousel animals\, see woodcarvers at work\, hear the familiar strains of the band organ\, and take a ride on the 1916 #1 Special carrousel. In celebration of New York Heritage Weekend the museum is offering free admission to all visitors and a variety of fun craft activities for kids inspired by the carrousel and other Herschell rides.
